Welcome to Liquidstate, the digital home of Bryan Ross. A full-time technologist, part-time sailor, and wishful scuba diver. On this blog you will find records of all my sailing/diving trips, as well as the occassional Linux trick, or comment on current news topics.
I currently work for large IT company, leading an infrastructure team responsible for a number of managed client systems, hosted exterally. With over a decade of commercial experience, I’ve built a wide, yet detailed, knowledge of data centres, telecoms, networking, operating systems, and systems software such as web, app and database server tools.
In my spare time, I like to spend my time on, in, or near the sea. I was encouraged to try sailing almost ten years ago by my then girlfriend. Since then I’ve completed a few RYA certifcations and accumulated thousands of miles. In summer, we sail most weekends with friends and family, usually teaching as we go. In previous years we’ve had sailing holidays to Ireland, Wales, Orkney, Iceland, and most recently, the Channel Isles.
Im also a keen scuba diver, but honestly dont get as much time underwater as I would like. Trained by a local club, most of my diving has been in the UK, mostly on the west coast of Scotland, or down in North Berwick. Although I’ve tried blue water diving in places like Egypt, I must admit that I still enjoy the challenge of UK diving. A self confessed wreck-junkie, my favourite dives have taken place off the island of Skye, but I must say the Thistlegorm in Egypt or watching Manta Rays in the Maldives must come a close second!
Thats probably enough about me for the time being. I’d like to think of myself as fun, social, and maybe even “adventurous”. My photos section therefore has quite a varied selection - with everything from geeky technology, exhilarating weekend events, sedate city breaks, and of course the occassional drunken night out!
